Programs to boost food security launched

KATHMANDU, July 23: The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MOAD), Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP), USAID, and World Bank have jointly launched two new food security initiatives, targeting some 310,000 poverty stricken families of western Nepal.



The total budget of the program meant for poverty alleviation and food deficit reduction is US$ 80.2 million (equivalent to Rs 7.619 billion) for five years.

Under the initiatives, Knowledge-based Integrated Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition project (KISAN) and Agriculture and Food Security Project (AFSP) programs will be implemented in western, mid-western and far-western development regions. [break]



KISAN project is part of USAID´s ´feed the future initiative´ program. The program, which will run for five years, aims to ensure food security and help in income generation for 160,000 families in 20 districts through integrated agriculture and nutritional activities. Total budget allocated for the program is $20.8 million.



Likewise, AFSP is funded by the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP). It aims to ensure food security of some 150,000 households of 19 districts in mid-western and far-western regions. Total budget for the project is $58 million, including $11.5 million to be injected by the government.

The programs will be implemented by MOAD with support from MOHP and under monitoring and supervision of the World Bank.



The projects have four main components: technology development and adaptation; technology dissemination and adoption; food and nutritional status enhancement and project management.



Speaking at the launching program, Vice-chairman of National Planning Commission Rabindra Kumar Shakya said that the recently launched Multi Sectoral Nutrition Program and Agricultural Development Strategy will pave the way for future course of agriculture, food and nutrition security in the country.

US Ambassador to Nepal Peter W Bodde said the Government of Nepal has devised the program based on its own priority.
