KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Prices of edible commodities such as pulses and popular rice varieties have remained stable in the market over the period of a couple of weeks. However, prices of edible oil and wheat flour have increased significantly.

“There has been no substantial change in the price of edible commodities in the market in the last couple of weeks, thanks to improved supplies,” said Pabitra Bajracharya, president of Nepal Retailers´ Association (NRA). “The price can be expected to remain stable for some more time.” [break]

Retailers said there has been no significant change in the price of rice and pulses. “The prices of edible commodities like rice and pulses have remained stable after the price increased about a month ago,” said Nabin Thapa of Dhading Kirana Shop in Samakhusi.

He, however, added that there have been slight increments in the prices of edible oil and flour.

Uma Adhikarki, another retailer at Nayabazaar, said prices of commodities have remained stable over the period as there has been no disruption in supply chain.

Prices of popular rice varieties like Jira Masino, Sona Mansuli and Indian Basmati has remained unchanged in the market. Jira Masino is selling for Rs 52 per kg, while the Sona Mansuli is priced Rs 40 per kg. The price of popular rice varieties had increased by up to 35 percent a month ago mainly due to obstruction in supply chain.

Similarly, prices of popular pulse varieties such as Mung Dal, Musuro Dal and Mung Khosta, among others have also remained unchanged over the period. While Mung khosta is selling for Rs 145 per kg, Mung Chata and Musuro are selling unchanged at Rs 150 per kg Rs 110 per kg respectively.

Price of Rahar Dal, however, has dropped to Rs Rs 110 per kg from Rs 120 to Rs 140 per kg recorded two weeks ago.

“Though the prices of edible commodities have remained unchanged, some retailers are increasing prices on their own which is making things difficult for consumers,” Thapa told myrepublica.com.

Edible oil, however, has become dearer over the period. Price of sunflower oil has increased by Rs 15 per liter to Rs 110 per kg, while soybean oil is selling for Rs 105 per liter, up from Rs 95 per liter. Similarly, price of Dhara brand of mustard oil has increased by Rs 10 per liter to Rs 150 per liter.

Price of wheat flour, however, has seen drastic rise over the period due to decline in domestic production and restriction in imports by the Indian government. Wheat flour is selling for Rs 40 per kg from Rs 28 per kg, while the price of whole flour has increased by Rs 5 per kg to Rs 35 per kg.
