KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said on Sunday that it is the president’s duty to stop the government from doing the ‘mischievous’ works at a time when there is no parliament in the country.

Speaking at a program organized by Nepal Press Union in the capital, Deuba said the president, as the head of state, should step in to resist the government’s ‘wrong moves’ and added that such a step would also help consolidate democracy. [break]

The senior NC leader expressed his distrust in the ruling UCPN (Maoist), saying the Maoist party basically believes in use of threats for its existence, and added that nothing big can be expected from such a party.

Also stating that the Maoist party has failed to fully transform itself into a democratic party, Deuba said the reinstatement of the Constituent Assembly still holds significance.

“To go for new polls, the constitution needs to be amended, and for that the CA needs to be revived,” he said. “If we hold new elections without amending constitution, the court might refuse to acknowledge polls as happened in Egypt.”
