Prez approves new Education Act

KATHMANDU, June 30: The Office of the President has approved the eighth amendment to the Education Act 1972 on Wednesday.



The amendment bill was approved by parliament about a month ago.

 According to the President's Office, President Bidya Devi Bhandari approved the act today as per Article 113 (2) of Constitution of Nepal 2072 (2015).

The amended Act provisions two categories of private schools--new ones will operate as trusts while the existing ones will operate as companies, free education for up to grade 12, transfer of teachers as civil servants and evaluation and promotion of teachers on the basis of school results, according to the Ministry of Education (MoE).


With the enactment of the new act, the +2 level has been intergated with school-level education and the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) has been scrapped. A National Examination Board, which will replace the HSEB, will conduct the (school leaving certificate) class 12 exams while class 10 exams will be conducted at regional/provincial levels, and class eight exams will be conducted at the district level, according to the MoE.

 The new act has envisioned school-level education as basic/elementary (grades one to eight) and secondary level (grades nine to 12).


The new act has also provisioned a National Education Council, National Examination Board, and the Education Review Office will be revitalized.
