The 14-year-old from Saraswati Tole, Biratnagar-7 had gone to Jogbani with friends Poonam Shrestha and Meena Shrestha on May 25. Maternal relatives of the Shresthas in Jogbani claim that Kajal had diarrhea and passed out on the night of May 26 and her father Shyam Singh Raut buried her without letting the police know about it. But the Kajal´s family claim that she was murdered by one Deepak Shrestha, neighbor of the relatives of Kajal´s friends in Jogbani, after rape. Kajal´s family lodged a formal complaint against Deepak on June 9. Her body was subsequently exhumed for autopsy and cremated on June 10.
The police had earlier claimed that Deepak, who went to Kathmandu on May 27, would be arrested within a couple of days. The police have arrested Deepak´s father Bir Bahadur, mother and Kajal´s friends Poonam and Meena and claim that investigation into the incident is still on. Kajal´s friends Poonam and Meena have admitted with the police that Deepak was with Kajal the night she was killed.
“It´s not that easy to arrest persons that are out of station. Investigations have also been delayed due to non-cooperation from the victims,” claimed Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Kumar Thapa.
SP Thapa claimed that Deepak was under police vigilance and can not go anywhere while Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) had promised to nab him on June 10.
“He (DSP Dhakal) now scolds us when we go to ask why Deepak has not been arrested till now,” Kajal´s sister Rajani complained.
