Police crack down on gambling

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Metropolitan Police has started crackdown on illegal gambling with the beginning of the Dashain festivities from Tuesday.



Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jaya Bahadur Chand, who is also chief of Metropolitan Police, said gambling in public places is a growing concern and police have identified some of the professional gambling dens in Kathmandu district. He said, “We have identified about 100 to 150 such places in Kathmandu and once we are informed about the illegal activities we will raid the dens within a few minutes.”[break]



SSP Chand said, “Police will raid any house if there is an unusual crowd.”



According to police, the Special Security Operation in Kathmandu has succeeded in controlling gambling activities in the capital. SSP Chand said that police officers encountered many groups gambling at several places in Kathmandu and they have been warned not to indulge in gambling activities.



"We will keep our eyes on casinos as well so that no Nepalis gamble there," he said. According to Metropolitan Police, 84 people have been arrested from Anna, Royal, Everest,Venus and Shangrila casinos over the last few months.



Similarly, over the past four months Metropolitan Police has arrested 107 people from different gambling dens in Kathmadnu.

Chand appealed to the locals to inform the police if they find any gambling activity in their area.



Superintendent of Police (SP) Dilip Kumar Chaudhary, who is also chief of Bhaktapur Metropolitan Police Range, said, “We have already deployed some plainclothesmen in the suspected areas.”



SP Chaudhary said, “Gambling not only causes loss of property but may also disintegrate families and promote crimes. We have formed a separate unit led by Police Inspector Amar Karki to curb gambling activities in Bhaktapur."



Police Inspector Abadesh Bista of Lalitpur Metropolitan Police Range said police have identified about eight to ten gambling dens in the district.
