PM urges UN members to support Gautam

KATHMANDU, Aug 3: The government has formally started lobbying for Nepal´s candidate for the presidency of UN General Assembly (UNGA) from Monday.



On Monday, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal wrote letters to executive heads of all 192 UN members, requesting their support to Nepal´s candidate for the UNGA presidency Kul Chandra Gautam, the prime minister´s special advisor on international affairs and peace process, according to an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).



Nepal and Qatar have filed their nominations for the prestigious post at the UN as this is the turn of Asia to nominate the president who will head the UNGA from September 2011 to September 2011. Qatar has already started lobbying for its candidate by writing letters to governments of UN member states.



Besides being the prime minister´s special advisor, Gautam is a former deputy executive director of UNICEF and Assistant Under Secretary General of UN.
