PM opens Gandaki Medical College

POKHARA, Aug 10: Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal inaugurated the Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Center amid a function on Monday. The Gandaki Medical College, which aims to produce world-class manpower in health sector, plans to take admissions from coming December. Executive director of the hospital and principal of the college Dr Digbijay Sharma said the college will produce 150 medical doctors, and 20 nurses, 40 lab technicians and 40 pharmacologists of bachelor´s level and 40 dental specialists annually.



The hospital will have 300-bed capacity initially and it will be later upgraded to 700-bed capacity with specialized services.



The hospital has professor Dr Upendra Devkota, and politicians Narahari Acharya and Pradip Nepal as advisors. The hospital has Rs 2500 million authorized capital, Rs 600 million issued capital and Rs 450 million paid capital with Nepali investment, management and manpower.



At present, the college has built 10 percent of infrastructure and it will build all infrastructure like hospital, academic buildings, hostels, labs and residential quarters at a cost of Rs 2 billion in Lekhnath Municipality area within the next three years.



Likewise, the hospital has sponsored studies of 17 medical graduates in Nepal, India and the Philippines.



At the inaugural ceremony, PM Nepal urged health professionals to avoid concentrating in Kathmandu and reach out to remote areas of the country. He expressed hopes that the hospital will establish itself as a model and benefit the nation as a whole.



Chairman of the college Prof Dr Upendra Devkota said the college was being established to prove that Nepalis are also capable of producing skilled health manpower and provide quality health services.
