KATHMANDU, June 18: Law Students´ Society (LSS), an organization of law students in the country, has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court against the release of rhesus monkeys from Lele Research Center.

The LSS has argued that the release of 263 monkeys from Lele violates international environment law as the government did not abide by the IUCN guidelines while releasing the monkeys.

“The government has released the monkeys in Shivapuri National Park without following precautionary principle and without adopting preventive measure which will severely harm the entire bio-diversity of the region,” Sudip Pokharel, a member of LSS said quoting the writ.

He also informed that the organization has requested the Court to issue an interim order to the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation to stop further release if there are other monkeys left in the research center.

Some 30 monkeys have died since the department released the monkeys in the park.
