KATHMANDU, Sept 20: The cabinet on Sunday formed a six-member committee led by Peace and Reconstruction Minister Rakam Chemjong to evaluate the loss of property during the armed conflict and recommend compensation. [break]

The cabinet took the decision in its bid to dispense justice to thousands of people who lost their properties to the ten-year long Maoist conflict.

The committee will have representatives from Home Ministry, Finance Ministry, Women Ministry and Local Development Ministry, said Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokharel, who is also the government spokesperson.

The cabinet also decided to provide compensation to those whose properties have been seized by the Maoists, after holding discussion on reports prepared by district administration offices.

Though the Maoists have time and again expressed commitment to return the seized properties, the party has not lived up to its words.

Similarly, the government also decided to give compensations to those injured during the Madhes movement.

In yet another decision, the government also dissolved all the hospital development boards across the country as they were formed by the former Maoist-led government.

Law Minister Prem Bahadur Singh said that the cabinet also formed a committee headed by Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala to implement the UN resolution on women and security.

Dhamala´s case withdrawn

The government has withdrawn the two criminal cases against Reporters´ Club Nepal´s President Rishi Dhamala and journalists Ram Shuvak Mahato and Birendra KM. They were arrested in February on charge of having link with armed underground group Ranabir Sena. They were charged with murder and extortion.

Their cases are sub judice at the Kathmandu District Court. Though Dhamala was released on a general date in March, Mahato and KM are still in jail.
