OPD services halted at Koshi Hospital

BIRATNAGAR, April 1: Hundreds of patients were affected as doctors and employees of the Koshi Zonal Hospital on Thursday halted OPD services to protest the manhandling of its laboratory staff on Wednesday.



Students of National Institute of Technology, who had been practicing at the hospital for one and half month, had mercilessly thrashed lab technician Rewati Pokharel and assistant Bablu Raya for not being allowed to perform lab tests. [break]



“They suddenly attacked me while I was working in the laboratory,” Pokharel, who is recovering at the emergency ward, said. The students had thrashed Pokharel and Raya with chairs.



“They had been pressuring to work in the lab since the beginning but we didn´t allow fearing of consequences of lab handling by novices,” Pokharel explained. The agitating doctors and employees have demanded security at the hospital and have warned they would not return to duty until the guilty are punished.



Hundreds of patients returned after reading the notice of closure of services. “The doctor had asked me to come at 10 to get my mother´s report but it was closed when I came,” rued Srijana Bhujel of Rangeli who had come to collect report of her asthmatic mother.



“We are concerned about the plight of patients but we can´t work in insecure environment. The hospital administration should sincerely address our demands,” lab assistant Ashok Shivakoti argued.
