Oli accepts ‘unexpected’ defeat, says people have final say in democracy

KATHMANDU, March 12: CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has acknowledged that his party failed to achieve the expected results in the recently concluded House of Representatives elections.



Taking to social media on Thursday, he wrote that in a democracy the final verdict rests with the people and that it is the duty of him and his party to accept that decision. “In this election, I could not achieve the result I had expected. Our party also failed to secure the anticipated outcome,” he wrote, adding, “In a democracy, the final decision belongs to the people, and it is the duty of my party and me to respect that decision. I accept the people’s mandate with full respect.”

Despite the unfavorable results, Oli expressed gratitude to voters, leaders, cadres, volunteers and supporters who cast their ballots for the party under the Sun election symbol.


“In this difficult moment as well, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all voters, leaders, cadres, volunteers, well-wishers and supporters who stood by us by casting their votes for the Sun symbol. Your trust is our strength. Your support is our power,” he said.


Oli further said that the election outcome would not weaken the party’s commitment to the people. “We will remain among the people, continue working for them, and move forward by further strengthening this relationship of trust. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who voted for us, supported us and placed their trust in us,” he added.
