OHCHR team visits Lamabagar

DOLAKHA, July 28: A team of United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has visited Dolakha to learn about the police handling of Tibetans illegally entering into Nepal and the state of illegal routes being used by Tibetans to make entry into the Nepali territory.



The OHCHR team returned home on Wednesday after learning the process of arresting illegal Tibetans, their movement to Nepali territory and condition of border points through which Tibetans illegally sneak into Nepal. The team stayed for two days in Lamabagar, the border point used mostly by Tibetans illegally entering into Nepal. [break]



Lamabagar border point has lately drawn media attention after the number of Tibetan illegally entering into Nepal through this border point increased sharply. The OHCHR team showed special interest in the issue following media reports that Nepali authorities were sending Tibetans illegally coming to Nepali territory back to Tibet.



The three-member OHCHR team led by Damiyan Turk included Human Rights Protection Officer Nirajan Thapaliya and Security Officer Mahesh Duwadi. They interacted with locals and visited local monasteries and held discussions with Dharma Gurus for two days. The team also met police personnel deputed in the Lamabagar border outpost.



Team leader Turk declined to talk to media and even asked not to write the news about it.



Talking to myrepublica.com, OHCHR-Nepal´s Public Information Officer Chun Gurung said the visit was aimed at learning about human rights situation in Dolakha and also study media reports that Nepali authorities were forcibly sending the Tibetans illegally entering into Nepal back to their country.
