In a statement issued on the eve of the first anniversary of the Supreme Court´s landmark verdict on disappearance, the UN human rights body also asked the government to prioritize the passage of a disappearance law consistent with the court´s judgment.
In a landmark verdict on June 1, 2007, the apex court had ordered the government to take immediate measures to address the needs of victims and ensure accountability for disappearances during the conflict.
These measures included establishing a commission of inquiry consistent with international standards, criminalizing enforced disappearances and investigating and prosecuting persons responsible for disappearances.
"The Supreme Court´s landmark 2007 decision established the standard by which to judge initiatives to criminalize and prosecute the crime of disappearance and to provide truth, justice and reparations to the victims," OHCHR-Nepal chief Richard Bennett said.
