KATHMANDU, March 17: Following the intervention of UCPN (Maoist) cadres in their peaceful protest near the Prime Minister´s residence in Baluwatar on Sunday morning, youth activists of the Occupy Baluwatar campaign has demanded security for the campaign participants.

Issuing a press statement, the activists have urged the government to provide security to the campaigners.[break]

“As everyone knows this is purely people´s movement against impunity. But since a few days we have been receiving threat from the Maoists and Sunday they even disrupted our movement calling police intervention. We demand security of the campaigners,” the statement reads.

According to the coordinator of the campaign Jagannath Lamichhane, it is shameful that the Maoists showed their true color right after Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai stepped down from the government. “When he was in the government, he remained quiet for 75 days. Just after he left the position, we have received threats from the party´s Newa and Kirat wings,” he said, adding that the disruption was trigged by the Maoist party´s intention "to protect convicted murder Bal Krishna Dhungel."

“On the other hand, Chief Justice Khila Raj Regmi has now become the Prime Minister. We´d like to know his view on the Supreme Court convicted murderer Dhungel?” Lamichhane said.

Two days earlier, UCPN-Maoist party´s Devendra Paudel and Lila Bahadur Thapa, coordinators of Newa and Kirat state committees in their statement had said that the party´s attention has been drawn to the campaign that "aimed at disturbing the election environment."

Following the disruption at the movement today, the police detained a dozen activists for 3 hours.

Demanding action against perpetrators of violence against women and impunity, the movement has been going on for 80 days now.
