KATHMANDU, March 21: Holger Obermann, a German international and former technical advisor at the All Nepal Football Association, has returned to Nepal  with an ambition of developing Nepali football from the grass root level.

The 78-year old, who have an experience of working more than 30-year under Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and German Football Federation, officially launched a grass root football development project entitled Nepal Youth Program (NYP) amid a function held in the capital on Friday.

Collaborating with Mount Kailash Boarding School in Kapan, Kathmandu, the project aspires not only in producing proficient football players but also the responsible and resourceful citizen through different academic and football related programs.

Currently, the project is educating and training 50 children, aged between 10-17 years as the first phase undertaking.

Obermann is both sponsor and technical advisor of the program.

In the long run, the project aims contributing in football development and education by running football academies at different parts of Nepal.

The idea of the project was incepted when Obermann was awarded German Football Ambassador in 2013 for his contribution in the development of the game in the developing countries.

Obermann then contacted Rajiv Nepali--his former student at one of the training centers when he was ANFA's technical advisor from 1990 to 1994--who had remained his good friend during the latter's six years staying in Germany--where he completed his master degree in industrial management.

Obermann donated 3,000 Euro, which he had received after being awarded as German Football Ambassador and training equipment in the process of establishing NYP.

A  football pitch, named after him as Holger Obermann ground, was constructed from Obermann's donation where training is being held six days a week.

Obermann, who was previously contracted for two years as ANFA's technical advisor by FIFA, says that he always felt he could have done much more for the development of Nepali football if he could come with youth development programs.

"While I was working here, all the focus was on the national team but not on the grass root development. Though I was praised and awarded for my performance in Nepal, I was never satisfied with it and always wanted to much more in the development of Nepali football.

Following his stellar performance at ANFA, his contract was extended for two more years. During his tenure in Nepal, Obermann established 12 youth football development centers at different parts of the country.

Players like Upendra Man Singh, Hari Khadka and Bal Gopal Maharjan are the products of youth football development centers which he initiated.

For his contribution in the development of Nepali football, Obermann was awarded ANFA's lifetime membership and Gorkha Dakshin Bahu in 2002.

"Nepal has done a lot for me and I am obliged to give back. I was always loved when I was here. I hope this program will expand and produce good footballers and responsible citizen in days to come.

Obermann says that his happiest moment was when Nepal won gold medal in the South Asian Games in 1993.
