Our correspondent Gajendra Bohara said five persons were killed and two injured when a jeep (Lu 1 Cha 3472) heading toward Khalanga from Damri plunged 200 meters down the road at Damri village of Pyuthan district on Saturday afternoon. [break]
The dead have been identified as jeep driver Madan Banjade (38) from Arghakachi, Hem Raj KC and Phusri Roka of Damri-5 of Pyuthan, Uma Roka of Damri-6, and Balaram Roka of Damri-5.
The two injured -- Mukti Singh Thapa, a 13-year-old boy from Damri-5, and Om Bahadur Thapa, of Damri-3 -- who are undergoing treatment at Pyuthan District Hospital Khalanga are in critical condition, according to the police.
Police suspect the driver lost control of the jeep as the road was slippery due to incessant rains over last few days. “The road where the accident took place was narrow,” police inspector Pralhad Shah said. “Locals usually do not use this road in rainy season. We are puzzled as to why they preferred the road.”
Police learnt about the incident only an hour later as the accident site is in an isolated area.
In Kavrepalanchowk, four persons were killed and 80 injured when a bus (Ba 2 Kha 3303) plunged 200 meters into a ravine at Thadekhola of Rabiopi VDC-5, according to our correspondent Madhusudan Guragain. Those killed have been identified as Pavita Giri, 23, and Januka Silwal of Rabiopi VDC-5, Sanukhanchi Tamang, 63, of Rabiopi VDC-3 and bus driver Tok Bahadur Tamang, 38, of Tinpiple VDC.
The bus was packed with women and children and most of them were headed for their homes to mark the Saune Sankranti festival, Saturday.
Fifty injured, most of them women and children, are being treated at Scheer Memorial Hospital, Banepa while four critially injured have been sent to Kathmandu.
