Those dead have been identified as Lil Prasad Ranabhat, his grandson Saurav, 10; Sita BK of Bulingtar, Nawalparasi; Dadhimaya Pandey, 55; Narayan Pata, 13; Dhana Bahadur Rana and his wife Bilisara Ranamagar of Jaubari, Nawalparasi; Janisara Bishwamagar, 22, of Bharatipur; and Jamisara Damai of Mithukpur, according to police. Preliminary estimation by police found the jeep (Lu 1 Jha 1880) carrying 15 passengers veered off 800 meters down the gravel road after problems in the steering. The site of accident is around 25 kilometers to the north of Daldale along the East-West Highway, according to the Area Police Post Kawasoti.
All the injured are receiving treatment at Chitwan Medical College, Bharatpur. Two of the injured including the jeep driver Dhanir Ram Mahato have received serious injuries.
A police team under Inspector Gajendra Kumar Chaudhary has reached the spot but is facing difficulty due to difficult terrain. "Eight passengers died on the spot due and one died on the way to the hospital. There is risk of further casualties,” Chaudhary said.
Locals said there is no communication facility in the area and the police were informed of the accident through the vehicles plying the route. Jeeps have been used for transportation in the hilly road that is not suitable for bigger vehicles.
