KATHMANDU, Sept 15: Nepal has established diplomatic relations with the Federated States of Micronesia, taking the number of countries with which Nepal maintains diplomatic relations to 185, according to a press release issued by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations.
Nepal's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Lok Bahadur Thapa, and Micronesia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Jeem S. Lippwe, signed a Joint Communiqué to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries on Monday, according to the press release.
Nepal, Uzbekistan enter formal diplomatic ties
On the occasion, the two ambassadors exchanged views on matters of common interest and discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation through national and international forums, particularly at the United Nations, for the mutual benefit of the two countries and their peoples.
The Federated States of Micronesia is an island nation comprising more than 600 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, according to the press release. It gained independence on November 3, 1986, and joined the United Nations on September 17, 1991.
The country has a total area of 701 square kilometers and an estimated population of 100,000, according to the press release.
Both Nepal and Micronesia are members of the Group of 77 and China.
