ITAHARI, Nov 27: Ruling out the possibility of forming a new government through consensus, Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhedar has urged Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML to form a majority government and end the protracted stalemate at the earliest.

"The NC and the UML need to lead the democratic alliance and Madhes-based parties will back the coalition," he said at a function in Itahari on Saturday. [break] "If the NC and UML can´t forge an alliance other small parties will have no option but to support Maoists to form a new government."

He said his first priority is to support the democratic alliance led by the NC and UML.

"I will support Maoists only if other two parties do not lead the coalition," he further explained. He claimed that the big three parties may reach an agreement on constitution writing and on concluding the peace process but they would never come together on the issue of government formation.
