KATHMANDU, July 23: Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to raise the issue of implementation of the five-point deal reached before the extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA), during the parliamentary meeting scheduled for Sunday.

An informal meeting of NC Central Working Committee (CWC) members held at the residence of the party president, Sushil Koirala, also decided to exert pressure on Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal to tender his resignation as he has failed to make progress on constitution drafting and the peace process.[break]

“The meeting has decided to present itself forcefully in parliament,” said NC CWC member Bala Bahadur KC.

KC said NC Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Paudel is scheduled to put forth the party´s views on the failure of the ruling parties to implement the five-point deal and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Khanal. “Nepali Congress will give an ultimatum to the government to accomplish the tasks as agreed in the five-point deal,” he said.

In the five-point deal, Prime Minister Khanal had agreed to step down to pave the way for the formation of a national consensus government. “Only one point of the five-point deal has so far been implemented. NC will present itself forcefully in parliament if the remaining four points of the agreement are not implemented on time,” KC further said.

Another CWC member, Purna Bahadur Khadka, said the meeting concluded that the prime minister had utterly failed to drive the peace process forward even though he heads a government including the Maoists and is also coordinator of the Special Committee for Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of Maoist combatants. “Though half of the CA´s extended term has already elapsed there has been no progress in either constitution drafting or the peace process,” he said.

NC is scheduled to hold a meeting on constitution drafting and the peace process Sunday with various political parties including the Maoists, UML and fringe parties.

The NC PP meeting scheduled for Sunday morning will formally endorse the decision taken by the informal CWC meeting to press in parliament for implementation of the five-point deal.
