KATHMANDU, June 4: Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) on Monday announced plans and programs for a year shortly after being recognized by the National Sports Council. NBA plans to organize at least eight national tournaments in a year.

NBA president Rajiv Shrestha said that the association is focused to develop the sport from grassroots. “We will soon organize a boxing tournament for novice and also other tournaments,” said Shrestha. “We are planning to take boxing to all 75 districts.”[break]

NBA also plans to provide training to school students in order to increase the number of players in the long run. Shrestha said the training for school children would be conducted every three months.

General Secretary of NBA Deepak Gurung informed that the association will organize first phase of Open Novice Boxing Tournament from July 25 to 28, keeping in mind the upcoming AIBA Youth World Boxing Championship scheduled to start from October 15 to 28 in Thailand.

To increase the number of boxing tournaments, NBA will support each regional association to organize at least one tournament in their regions. All tournaments will follow the AIBA rules. Novice, junior, sub-junior and senior tournaments are on cards, NBA announced.

NBA has also revealed its plan to categorize players under A, B and C categories. The players in the A category will receive a monthly allowance from NBA. The association, however, did not reveal the allowance amount. The players in the A category will also receive other facilities like life insurance and opportunity to train abroad.

Under NBA’s plans, referees and coaches will also be given a life insurance facility and the opportunity to train abroad in coordination with international associations. The association hopes to introduce welfare fund for players and coaches.

With new opportunities for training and additional facilities, NBA is confident of winning gold and silver medals in the South Asian Games and other regional level tournaments.

NBA also announced to organize First South Asian Boxing Championship within 2013. For the championship, NBA will build a covered hall, a model for which has already been sent to National Sports Council. NBA has allocated Rs 33 million for the covered hall. President Shrestha said that the covered hall will likely be built at Mulpani.

NBA said it is seeking a budget of Rs 48.81 million from the government for the development of boxing in Nepal.

Lama, Shrestha plotted against me: Thapa

Rabiraj Thapa, who claims to be the legitimate president of Nepal Boxing Association (NBA), has criticized the National Sports Council´s (NSC) decision to recognize the NBA led by Rajiv Shrestha. Thapa has also accused NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama and Rajiv Shrestha of plotting against his committee.

The two NBA factions, one led by Thapa and the other by Shrestha, have been at loggerheads after then president Thapa postponed the general assembly on February 18 and the Shrestha faction held election of its executive committee claiming a majority of the general assembly members.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, Thapa has warned of stern protests against NSC did not withdraw its decision. "We will hold a comprehensive meeting of boxing players, district representatives and other stakeholders in the future and form a new committee," said the statement.
