KATHMANDU, July 9: The recent floods and landslide that started from the second week of June has so far claimed 50 lives whereas 19 people are still missing across the country, the government said on Monday. Likewise, a total of 900 houses have been completely destroyed in the disaster whereas 1,496 homes are in need of repair.
Addressing a government taskforce meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO) on Monday, Secretary Krishna Hari Banskota said that 1,194 households have been displaced by the natural disaster.[break]
According to Banskota, 25 districts including Darchula, Dailekh, Baitadi, Doti, Humla, Mustang, Palpa, Jumla, Bahjang, Bardiya and Dadeldhura have been affected from the flood and landslide. Likewise, Dolpa, Kalikot, Achham, Pyuthan, Salyan, Kanchanpur, Bardiya, Surkhet, Rupandehi, Taplejung, Sirha, Nawalparasi, Bajura and Sindhupalchok are among the affected. Around 1,000 livestock were killed in the disaster.
The third meeting of the secretary-level taskforce directed the authorities to speed up rescue efforts in the affected areas.
While the government is being criticized for the poor health service in Darchula after a massive flood and landslide in second week of June, Health secretary Pravin Mishra informed that only one doctor was working at temporary hospital in the district.
Around 30-40 patients on an average are visiting the hospital for treatment whereas and seven are admitted at the medical ward, he added. Responding to Mishra, the PMO secretary asked him to send one more doctor to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Local Development and Federal Affairs is collecting full details about the losses in the disaster. Secretary Shanta Bahadur Shrestha of the ministry mentioned that non-governmental organizations are also assisting the government in distributing relief package and rehabilitation of the displaced families. However, Shrestha would not tell how many families have been rehabilitated so far.
