The Kapilbastu police chief has been in the eye of an storm over his tough measures to control crime which led to the arrest of Kausher Ali Musalman for his alleged involvement in extortion. He was arrested last week.

According to sources, the leaders of MPRF-D, Kapilbastu, are divided over the issue of Kausher´s arrest. Influential leader Kali Prasad Sharma has already opposed the district chairman´s move to lobby for Basnet´s transfer. Sharma said the party must not protect those involved in criminal activities.

“I have come to urge the party leadership that the party must not give protection to bad people,” Sharma told Republica over telephone.

However, Chaudhari could not be contacted for his comment.
