"Malik, who holds a bachelor´s degree in law, does not have management experience. How can we expect improvement of NRC´s financial position with the appointment of a person who has no knowledge of management?" the source said.
Earlier also, Alam had proposed an under-SLC person for appointment to the same post and the cabinet had rejected the proposal.
The seven decades old railway service has been victim to mismanagement and financial crisis for years due lack of proper attention by the government.
In an attempt to give a new lease of life to the railway -- Nepal´s only railway service, the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management (MoLTM) had formulated a ten-year strategy last October.
The strategy focuses on strengthening and better managing the 51-km long railway line (now only 29 km operational) to upgrade its service.
As per the strategy, the government will also increase number of passengers to 1.7 million per year from existing 1.2 million, within a year.
During the Fiscal Year 2008/09, the railway had ferried 8,296 tons of goods. Likewise, the government also aims to increase daily fare collection to Rs 125,000 from existing Rs 65,000 by completely disallowing passengers without tickets.
