Mid-West University lifts Jaya Nepal Cup

KIRTIPUR, Jan 28: Mid-West University of Nepal has clinched the title of the first Jaya Nepal Cup Championship cricket tournament.

The Mid-West University won the title, defeating Lucknow University of India by 58 runs in the final match held at Kirtipur-based Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba gave away trophies and medals to the winner and runner-up teams.

In the final match, Mid-West University won the toss and chose to bat first. A 117-run partnership between Dewan Pun and Bipin Khatri helped the Mid-Western University post a good total of 175 runs for 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Dewan scored 58 runs off 36 balls while Bipin contributed 59 runs off 28 balls.  

In reply, Lucknow University was restricted to 117 runs for 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Manan Kandawa scored the highest 58 runs for Lucknow University.

Meanwhile, Bipin Khatri, who took 11 wickets in five matches in the championship, was adjudged 'outstanding bowler' and 'player of the tournament' while Lokendra Bam was adjudged 'outstanding batsman'.

Nepal Students Union had organized the championship, where eight universities from three countries- Nepal, India and Bangladesh,  participated.

Tribhuvan University, Dhaka University, Purbanchal University and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Bihar of India, were in Group 'A' while Kathmandu University, Mid-West University, and India's Lucknow University and Delhi University were in Group 'B'.
