Altogether 2,000 army athletes had participated in the tournament that featured competitions in swimming, athletics, volleyball, football, basketball, boxing, taekwondo and cycling events, DGMT Chief Major General Victor Shumsher Rana said during the closing ceremony held at the Army Physical Training and Sports Center, Lagankhel.[break]
“This [annual] tournament has been helpful in developing the standard of sports as well as in producing players of national and international levels,” said Rana.
According to Rana, the NA´s newly-formed cricket team is all set to host a friendly match with the British Infantry Cricket Team on October 17 with a view to strengthening ties between the two nations through sports.
Mid Division Headquarters also finished on top in the overall athletics events to take the running shiled and bag a purse of Rs 25,000. Valley Division Headquarters claimed its share of Rs 15,000 securing second position while Eastern Division Headquarters finished third and received Rs 10,000.
Dilip Thapa Magar of Valley Division was declared the best male player of the tournament for winning six gold medals in swimming. He was awarded a motorbike.
In the women´s section, Durga Devkota of Valley Division won the best player award. She set two new army records -- one in women´s 100 meters and the other in women´s 400 meters. She received a television set for her exploits.
CoAS General Gaurav Shumsher Rana awarded Rs 22,000 to Uttam Khatri for winning the men´s marathon while men´s 10,000m winner Letter Singh Khatri bagged Rs 8,000.
On Monday, Eastern Division set a new army record in men´s 4x100 meters relay with a time of 43.78 seconds. Western Division Headquarters finished second in the event.
In other events held on the final day, Laxmi Pandey of Air Defense Unit won the women´s 1,500m race clocking 5 minutes 13.01 seconds. Her teammate Menuka Shrestha secured the second position with a time of 5 minutes 21 seconds while Anjana Basnet of Mid Division finished 3.4 seconds behind to seal the third position.
Likewise, Bishesh Mahato of Eastern Division, Yogendra Lama of Mid Division and Shovakant Jamarkattel of Eastern Division secured the top three positions in the men´s 110 meters hurdles.
The winning team will receive the CoAS Trophy on Army Day, which falls on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri every year.
Altogether six division headquarters, four directorates and one special force unit had competed in the tournament.
