Mayanka wins maiden title

KATHMANDU, April 1: Mayanka Rana won her first Sahabir Memorial Open Lawn Tennis Tournament after emerging victorious 4-6, 7-5 and 6-4 in the battle between the twins at the Armed Police Force (APF) headquarters in Halchowk, Kathmandu on Wednesday.

In an evenly contested women's singles final between the twin daughters of Nepal Lawn Tennis Association's President Manoj Rana, Mayanka came from a set down but dominated the final set after toiling hard to win the rigorous second set over her younger sister Mahika.The triumph fetched Mayanka the cash award of Rs 60,000 while her sister had to be content with Rs 30,000.

"It was a competitive final and I am very happy about winning my first title in this tournament," said Mayanka after her victory.

"I had only made up to the semis before. I had prepared hard this time and my efforts bore fruits. I will be working hard to win more champioships."

Earlier in the championship, Kamal Bhandari of Nepal Police Club won men's singles title beating Jitendra Pariyar of APF. Team of Sriyansh Karki and Jitendra claimed men's doubles title defeating the team of Aatmaram Karki and Santosh Khatri while Kamal also won mixed doubles title pairing with Ganga Sharma. Their pair had defeated Aatmaram and Ira Raut.
