KATHMANDU, July 29:  The Maoists have prepared a written document responding to the demands raised by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) -- an alliance of Madhes-based parties -- in a bid to garner support for the formation of Maoist-led government. A meeting of the Maoist top office bearers on Thursday morning prepared the document.

Though there are significant differences, the Maoists claim that they would get UDMF support to form the new government. [break]

"Going by their demands, UDMF is closer to us than the Nepali Congress (NC). So we expect that the UDMF would support us if it does not have other motives," said Maoist Standing Committee member CP Gajurel.

But the Maoists are at loggerheads with the UMDF over several issues. The Maoists are not in favor of accepting the UMDF demand for a single autonomous province though the party has already agreed to form two provinces in the region.

Similarly, the Maoists have also not accepted the demand for setting up criteria for the integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants.

The party has stated that it cannot accept pluralism in the new constitution, but it can accept a competitive political system. But the Maoists are ready to hold further talks on bulk recruitment of Madhesis into the security forces, including the Nepal Army.

The support from UDMF, which commands 82 seats in parliament, holds the key to formation of a Maoist-led government. The Maoists are likely to hold a meeting with UMDF on Friday.
