KATHMANDU, June 18: The politburo meeting of the Unified CPN-Maoist on Thursday decided to root for presidential system of government and a federal set up based on nationalities.[break]

The meeting that started on Tuesday decided that the country should go for a presidential system as proposed in the party´s draft on new constitution, which is yet to be submitted to the constitutional committee of the Constituent Assembly.

“We are going for presidential system as our past shows that Westminster model gives way for instability of the government,” said Maoist spokesperson Dinanath Sharma.

Leaving aside the discussion on the political paper presented by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the politburo meeting started deliberating on the party´s draft proposal on new constitution on Wednesday. All the leaders finished expressing their opinions on the draft on Thursday. The meeting will resume at 11 a.m. on Friday. “From tomorrow we shall begin discussion on the political document of the chairman,” said Sharma.

According to a leader, there is no possibility of the presentation of a separate political paper during the meeting. “But the chairman is likely to include the issues raised by some party leaders,” said the leader. The party hardliners are in favor of a “people´s rebellion” as the party´s future course of action.

Dahal´s paper proposes a national unity government and expresses commitment to multiparty democracy. The meeting is likely to fix the date for the party general convention. The party has not held its general convention for the last 18 years.
