Airing their views at a meeting of the Committee on Social Justice and Human Rights on Tuesday, lawmakers representing the former rebel party expressed doubts about the reliability and approach of the commissions. “Though the commissions were formed with a view to find out the truth and give justice to victims, the recent verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) has become an obstruction to the process,” said UCPN (Maoist) lawmaker Yogendra Tamang at the meeting.
The SC had issued a verdict revoking amnesty for perpetrators in certain war era cases.
However, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML lawmakers stressed that impunity could not be ended without bringing perpetrator of the war era crimes to justice.
Responding to the lawmakers’ concern, TRC Chairman Surya Kiran Gurung and CIED Chairman Lokendra Mallik assured that both commissions will not reach to a conclusion over any cases without listening to both state and the former rebels.
Meanwhile, the committee has directed the government to provide the TRC and CIED with necessary resources so that they could move ahead with the task assigned to them at the earliest. Committee decision comes after chief of both commissions said that functioning of the commission has become difficult due to lack of infrastructure and resources.
