KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Major Madhesi parties have tried to include candidates from as many communities as possible in their list of candidates for the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) polls slated for November 19.

“We have selected 26 women candidates, with 11 from hill communities and the remaining 15 from Tarai community. Likewise, in the line with the principle of inclusiveness, we have 12 Muslim candidates, 9 Dalit candidates and 23 male candidates from hill community,” said Kayastha.

When asked about the criterion for the selection of candidates, Kayastha said, “There was no hard and fast basis for the selection. We picked candidates on the basis of their command and contribution in the constituencies.”

“We chose a candidate from a community that constituted a majority in a particular constituency. This concept is mainly applicable in case of Muslim community more than others,” he added.

Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhavana Party has decided to contest in more than 200 constituencies. “There will be 7 candidates from Muslim community, 63 from Hill community, 50 from women community, 4 from Dalit community, among others, have been selected from different community,” Manish Suman, General Secretary of the party told Republica.

Suman further added that he himself, Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karn, Vice Chairman Narsingh Chaudhary, among others have been selected for Proprtional Representation (PR) electoral system.

Bijay Gachchhadar-led MPRF-D has also decided to contest in over 200 constituencies. “We are yet to finalize the list of candidates as there is dispute over five constituencies,” said Ravindra Thakur, the party secretary. He claimed that their party will select candidates from different communities.

Mahanth Thakur-led Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP) Spokesperson Sarbendra Nath Sukla has said that their party has selected a total of 125 candidates. “We have selected 25 women candidates, 6 Muslim, 3 Dalit, and 19 candidates from hill community,” said Govind Chaudhary, general secretary of the party. He further said that they have selected eight candidates each from Dalit and Muslim community under PR electoral system.

Asserting that the seat adjustment among Madhesi parties would not materialize, Chaudhary said, “The possibility of seat adjustment between Madhesi parties is over as the parties have decided to contest the November polls separately.”
