Issuing a press statement on Monday, Mahato said it was necessary to delineate constituencies on the basis of population as per Article 63 (3) of the Interim Constitution. “It is unconstitutional to not increase the number of electoral constituencies in line with the increase in population,” the statement reads. The statement also demanded 121 electoral constituencies in Madhes, stating that more than half of the country´s population lives in the Tarai.[break]
The party submitted a memorandum to the Interim Election Council Chairman Khil Raj Regmi on Monday, stating that CDC´s recommendation was neither fair nor realistic. The party staged a rally at Shanti Batika, Kathmandu against the CDC report and demanded that the report be ignored.
“CDC´s such move has violated the agreement reached between our party and the government on May 26, 2013 which guarantees that the delineation of constituencies should be done on the basis of population in the Tarai,” the statement further claims.
Meanwhile, different Madhes-based parties have also expresed dissatisfaction over the CDC recommendation by organizing formal functions in various districts.
