JUMLA, Aug 24: If all goes well, all the 30 VDCs in the rural backwaters of Karnali district will soon be well connected to the district headquarters Jumla. Roads are being constructed through joint efforts of the locals and local authorities as part of the Jumla District Development Committee´s plan of 2006.

Nepal Army, which has been constructing the road connecting Mugu headquarters and Gamgadi, said it has already completed construction of around 27 km track. This road connects eight of the 11 villages of Sauja. District technical office said the 22.2 km stretch between Jumla airport and Dilli Chaur only needs minor repairs. [break]

Of the proposed 18 km stretch that connects Dolpa to the district headquarters, 17 km has already been completed. According to the technical team, the road will come into operation by October.

Local Development Officer Ramesh Kumar KC said the roads could not have been constructed without support from the locals, who provided free labor for the project.

Need of bridges

Though the construction of roads is almost complete, the district lacks bridges across its rivers to make road transport feasible. If we could construct bridges over the Tila and Jawa rivers, all the 30 VDCs would be well connected, Binod Bhattarai, Chief of District Technical Office said.
