The two hour long musical play is a cross-curriculum of different subjects in their academic calendar such as English and Social Studies. “Malpi students have been actively participating in such plays every year,” says extra-curricular activities coordinator Richard Moktan of the school.
The story revolves around the uprising of people against the then French monarchy and expounds on various societal issues such as morality and justice. “We went through the similar situation in Nepal and are still struggling for a better country which happen to coincides with the play,” adds Richard. Les Miserable is the product of “group effort of the students and the administration” says Moktan. “The administration comes up with the synopsis of various plays and discusses them with students among which the popular ones are acted by the students.”The school stages such plays with an active input of the students in order to build their confidence level and develop the student’s command over English language. The school has been producing such plays since 2004. This year approximately 140 students from grade 8, 9 and 10 are participating in the play. “Students love doing plays. Therefore to incorporate more students we have used two groups of students to stage the same play that will be staged two days simultaneously,” the coordinator says.
The play will be staged for the last time on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Nepal Academy Hall in Kamaladi. And tickets are available at the gate.
