KATHMANDU, July 15: Lawmakers on Tuesday vowed to amend the clause related to women's right in the draft the constitution. Women right activists and many lawmakers are upset with lack of adequate provisions in the draft constitution on reproductive health rights and over the ambiguities on abortion.
Speaking at an interaction program on draft constitution and reproductive health rights, organized by Sancharika Samuha and Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD), in the capital on Wednesday, Lawmaker Gagan Thapa said, "I will strongly advocate removing the term abortion from the draft constitution. Also, there is a need to amend and add many provisions related to women in the draft," said he.

Similarly, Rewati Raman Bhandari, a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), said that they had no intention to curtail the rights of women in any way in the upcoming constitution.
"Including few components of reproductive health rights was a technical error. We don't aim to curtail any rights of women and will amend the provision related to reproductive health," he said during the program.
The recently-tabled draft of the constitution lacks clear provisions on how much freedom of choice women have over their reproductive health.
