Speaking at the meeting today of the Parliamentary Good Governance and Monitoring Committee, lawmakers said that the governmental bodies were incapable in carrying out the relief operations smoothly. They said that the relief distribution remained ineffective, as they were deprived of any responsibility for the same.Supporting bodies and agencies from abroad were willing to support more but the government did not have a clear priority model and areas which led to confusion and uncertainty, they argued. Lawmakers also blamed the government for not being prompt and capable enough in responding to the immediate needs in the aftermath of the disaster.
The Committee members said very rich people too were found standing in the queue to receive relief materials whereas the real victims failed to get even the minimum support from the government and other organizations. They said there is hidden interest upon the voices that advocates for distributing relief materials in an independent way rather than through one-door system.
The quake victims came to the their people's representatives following the quake but the lawmakers failed to address even the minimum demand as the State had not given due responsibilities to them, they said while expressing their dissatisfaction in the meeting.
Reports shows the real victims failed to get the relief and that there should be individual as well as collective efforts to take the relief to the targeted groups and prevent possible corruptions and financial irregularities.
The terror of tremor has dismantled our inner strength from body to lifestyle but it is very unfortunate to hear that the funds and relief support given by donors have been misused, they said while calling for impartial politics in the country at the moment.
At the meeting chaired by the Committee chairperson Sherdhan Rai, members Sher Bahadur Deuba, Janakraj Joshi, Siddhi Lal Singh, Milan Kumari Rajbansi, Udaya Nepali, Ambika Khawas Rajbansi, Dhyangovinda Ranjit, Amber Bahadur Thapa, Jitu Gautam among others pointed out the need for a clear role of the people's representatives at this time of calamity.
