LALITPUR, Dec 24: In order to widen the roads in Kathmandu valley, the removal of the houses and huts set up by encroaching upon the roads in Lalitpur district began on Saturday.

The road widening campaign was jointly initiated by the Municipal Development Committee, Lalitpur, Road Division Office, and Office of the Traffic Police by dismantling the houses and huts which encroached upon the road.

In the first phase, the encroachment upon the roads from Kandevata of Kupandole to Pulchowk Supermarket through Jhamshi Khel will be removed.

Two dozers and labours have been used for this. Dr Bhaikaji Tiwari of Kathmandu Valley Municipal Development Committee said the roads were being widened 11 meters on both sides from the central point of the road.

The house and huts set up against the rule would not be provided compensation but fined, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Traffic Police Chief at Lalitpur, Kuber Khadyat said the road widening campaign would be made successful at any cost.

Constituent Assembly member of the UCPN (Maoist) from Lalitpur, Pampha Bhusal said the efforts made to widen the encroached roads were gaining ground now.
