A cabinet meeting on Thursday took a decision to this effect. The relatives of Nepali had refused to accept the dead body demanding high-level probe into the incident, punishment to the guilty and proper compensation. The dead body was kept at the mortuary in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj.[break]
Binod Pahadi, coordinator of the probe committee formed by Dalit activists, said, “Though the victim´s kin have agreed to receive the dead body, they will continue to exert pressure on the government to probe the incident.” He said as the death occurred in jail, on-duty officials must take responsibility for the incident.
Earlier, the probe committee had unveiled its findings after the field study that the death was a result of negligence of the prison administration.
Kumar Nepali, who was serving his term in Rasuwa jail, had been transferred to Dhulikhel jail as he was suffering from mental illness. After four days of his transfer to Dhulikhel jail, Kumar died in a brawl with another prisoner Hari Sapkota of Tanahu. Sapkota has confessed that he stabbed Nepali to death with a sharp metal stick.
The probe committee comprising legal experts, Dalits rights activists and representatives of National Dalit Commission, had visited the prison staff after the incident.
Kumar´s father Murali Bahadur Damai said, “On Monday, we will take the body to Rasuwa for final rites.” He also said that he had not expected support from the government and thanked the rights activists for pressing the government to pay compensation.
