Ireland, Afghanistan stunned

KATHMANDU, July 15: Defending champion Ireland and runner-up of Afghanistan faced stunning defeats in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier on Wednesday.

In Group A match, Papua New Guinea defeated co-host and three-time champion Ireland by two wickets at Stormont, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Similarly, Oman thumped Afghanistan by 40 runs in Group B match played at Edinburgh in Scotland.PNG chased 124 runs target with seven balls to spare to edge past the favorite Ireland. Tailender Norman Vanua blasted 28 runs facing only 10 balls that included four sixes. Assad VAla added 32-run-a-ball for PNG.

Earlier, winning the toss and opting to bat first, Ireland scored a moderate total of 123/9 in allotted 20 overs with William Porterfield's 57 runs from 58 balls.Willie Gavara bagged highest three wickets for PNG.

With the win PNG collected five points from three matches, while Ireland has six points from four matches.

Likewise, in Group B match, Oman scored 144/7 and restricted Afghanistan on 104 in 17.5 overs as Zeeshan Maqsood and Mehran Khan claimed four wickets each for Oman.

Mohammad Shahzad (28) and Javed Ahmadi (22) were major run scorers for Afghanistan.

Man-of-the-match Mehran gave away 24 runs in his four overs spell, while Zeeshan gave 23 runs in 2.5 overs to bag four wickets.

Earlier, Jatinder Singh (40) and Zeeshan (29) helped Oman put fighting total.

With the win Oman collected six points from four matches, while Afghanistan leads the standings with seven points from five matches.
