KATHMANDU, Aug 17 : A number of youths dropped in at Moksh Restaurant in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur, on Saturday to be a part of the youth festival, ‘IYD Yuwak Yuwati Mela’. Organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with United Nations agencies and NGOs, the event was a platform for different organizations to put up their stalls and inform the participants about their endeavors.

“I think the event has been a really good platform for young people to learn about their career options. With representatives of different volunteer organizations in the stalls, participants have got an opportunity to build up contacts, which will be beneficial if they are interested to join,” shared Abdus Miya, member of Youth Initiative, a youth led organization that carries out different projects related with youth empowerment in Nepal. Some youths were seen painting the messages of peace and child rights on the canvas. Skits were presented by children from Maiti Nepal and Child Workers in Nepal (CWIN), and different products and goodies were also displayed for sale. Heart Beat had momo stalls to raise funds for their ‘School on Wheels’ initiative. Yuwalaya had a pecha-kucha style event. Pravasi Nepali Coordination Committee (PNCC), a non-profit making organization of committed returnee migrant workers dedicated to protecting and promoting migrant workers’ rights at national, regional and international levels, and Pourakhi Nepal, an organization of returnee women migrant workers, provided information about safe migration to the visitors. Likewise, Restless Development Nepal showcased their Dance4Life (D4L) program while Yatra and Initiative Outdoor informed about their works to the participants. Live music and performance were other attractions of the fair.

Aradhana Gurung Shrestha, Youth Programme Officer at United Nations Population Fund (UNDP) said, “The main purpose behind organizing the event is to highlight the livelihood options in the country, especially to the youths,” adding, “It’s been an encouragement for the national organizations participating in the fair, to have their works displayed and communicated.”

The ‘IYD Yuwak Yuwati Mela’ marked the closing of the International Youth Day celebration week that had started from Monday, August 12. This year, the celebration emphasized on youth migration and development.
