KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Indigenous lawmakers of the UCPN (Maoist) have expressed ire at party leadership for dividing areas, which are home to large indigenous population, into separate provinces, saying this is against the party line and the party's previous commitments.

Speaking at the parliamentary party meeting held in Singha Durbar on Monday, they demanded clarification from the party leadership for compromising on the party's principle. Most of the lawmakers representing Magar and Tharu communities said provinces should be delineated in a way that indigenous community can be accommodated in a single province. They demanded that areas with predominantly Tharu population in Kailali and Kanchanpur be included in province-5 instead of province-6.

Likewise, Tharu lawmakers from eastern tarai demanded that Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari should be separated from hill areas of province-1.

Similarly, lawmakers from Rukum and Rolpa flayed the party leadership for dividing the areas with predominantly Magar population into two separate provinces. "The delineation of provinces is not consistent with the five bases of identity set by the Constituent Assembly (CA). People are not going to accept the federal map in its present form," said lawmaker Ganesh Man Pun.

Responding to lawmakers' concerns, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the constitution can be amended in future once it institutionalizes federalism.
