KATHMANDU: About half a decade ago, Saurav Tiwari would have never imagined that he could write poems in around half hour or win competitions by reciting his words. He believes his interest in poetry since an early age helped him win competitions.

Ninteen-year-old Saurav is a student of Bachelor of Social Sciences at National College. He has written more than 400 poems and won scores of poetry competitions. He first started writing poems when he was in grade five. It wasn’t like something inspired him to write poems, he just put his thoughts into words and that is how it all started.

Describing himself as ‘a person who loves to think’, Saurav said he had a number of role models, including Nawaraj Parajuli, Bhupi Sherchan and Words Warrior Club (a poetry club), among others.

When Saurav first started writing poems, he focused on rhyming. Now, he is trying his best to focus on ‘spoken words’. He said, “It’s like learning something new.” He started focusing on ‘spoken words’ after winning a ‘Slam Poetry’ competition (Bachelor’s level category) during ‘Ace Expression’ organized by Ace Institute of management in September, 2016.

“I don’t want to stay limited as a poet. I aspire to become an all-rounder, be good in all forms of writing. Currently, I am planning to publish a book containing my poems by the end of this year. The book will be called ‘Marisa’, and have 30 poems,” he said. He further mentioned that he was working to publish his novel, which is half-finished.

Other than writing poems, Saurav is also interested in mass communication and journalism. He is also the president of a youth related non-governmental organization (NGO), called ‘Common Actions for Social transformation’. The organization’s first step was establishing a library in Rukum’s Kakri VDC, while Saurav is planning to add books in the library through fund raising programs.

When asked about what he feels about poetry and what makes a good poet, he said, “Poetry is something that comes from within. As far as being a good poet is concerned, one should be able to make readers understand their thoughts through words. Aspiring poets should never stop working on their poems.”

He added, “People might say that poetry will badly affect your academics, don’t be discouraged. You just have to learn time management. And if you’re good at it, no one can stop you from being successful.”
