Gurukul taking ‘Katha Nalapaniko’ to Australia

KATHMANDU, April 10: Aarohan Gurukul is adapting the legendary Battle of Nalapani into a play to be staged in Australia. Being directed by Sunil Pokharel, the play 'Katha Nalapaniko' is in the middle of rehearsals.

The battle led by Bir Balbhadra Kunwar was followed by 600 soldiers, women and children. Kunwar is being portrayed by Raj Kumar Khatiwada with actors like Nisha Sharma, Sarita Giri, and Arjun DC supporting him.


It is now 200 years since the battle of Nalapani, and it is to mark the occasion that Gurukul in cooperation with Gurkha Nepali community in Australia is staging the play. Written by Shankar Rijal, the one-hour-long play is to be performed on May 2 at the York Theater in Sydney, Australia.

Speaking about the play with Republica, Director Pokharel said, "This battle carries respect and prestige for Nepalis all over the world. The play will be enacted by actors from Gurukul and some Nepalis living in Australia."

The play will also be shown in Melbourne. According to the director, the play could also be shown in Nepal.
