Grand Master Ziaur wins title, qualifies for 2015 Chess WC

KATHMANDU, April 1: Grand Master (GM) Ziaur Rahman (with rating 2496) of Bangladesh claimed Asian Zonal 3.2 title concluding the tournament on 7.5 points by the end of final ninth round in Nagarkot, Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The triumph earned Ziaur, who had won the zonal championship for the third consecutive time, qualification for the 2015 Chess World Cup and fetched him $ 1500.

Ziaur played a draw against Pakistani International Master (IM) Mahmood Lodhi (rated 2345) on the concluding day.

Women IM Samima Akter Liza (2130), also from Bangladesh, won women's title concluding the tournament on 7.5 points from nine matches. She won $ 1000.

GM Abdulla Al-Rakib (2521) of Bangladesh finished second with 6.5 points while Bangladeshi GM Enamul Hossain (2437) finished third.

IM Minhazuddin Ahmed (2443) of Bangladesh, Nepal's Candidate Master (CM) Rupesh Jaiswal (2156), finished at fourth and fifth respectively with equal 6 points.

Rupesh, who had an impressive outing, also earned the title of FM.

Likewise, GM Niaz Murshed (2464) of Bangladesh finished at sixth with 5.5 points. IM Abu Sufian Shakil (2351) of Bangladesh, Nepal's Madan Krishna Kayastha (2083) and IM Mahmood Lodhi (2345) of Pakistan took seventh, eighth and ninth places respectively with equal 5.5 points.

Bhupendra Niraula (1989) of Nepal finished at tenth with five points while Madan Krishna, Bhupendra and Bibek Thing (2069) earned title of CM in this tournament.

Women FM Nazrana Khan (1965) of Bangladesh took second place with seven points while Rani Hamid (1989), also from Bangladesh, finished third with 6.5 points.

Likewise, FM Sultana Sharmin Shirin (2031) of Bangladesh finished at fourth with 6.5 points as IM Ranasinghe Sachini (1838) of Sri Lanka, Wasif Zenobia (1551) of Pakistan, and Ashmita Adhikari (1627) of Nepal took fifth, sixth and seventh places respectively with equal five points.

Mahumoda Haq Chaudhary of Bangladesh finished eighth with 4.5 points. Mahumoda and Nepal's Monalisa Khamboo (1733) earned CM title.

Players from host Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan participated in five-day tournament.

The total cash award of the tournament was $ 6,000.
