Govt names three-member panel to pick NRB governor

KATHMANDU, March 14: The government has appointed a three-member committee led by Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel to recommend the best three candidates for the position of governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). The committee comprises former NRB Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and Former Vice-chairperson of National Planning Commission Bishwo Nath Poudel. 

One of the nominees will be appointed the governor, succeeding the incumbent NRB Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari who retires early next month (April 6). Adhikari took office 6th April, 2020 when Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s close aide Yuba Raj Khatiwada was the finance minister in the Cabinet led by Oli himself. 

One of the two incumbent deputy governors - Neelam Dhungana Timsina and Bam Bahadur Mishra - will be among the three nominees. Both Dhungana and Mishra also serve in the seven-member NRB Board of Directors, constituted on 6th April, 2020 under the chairmanship of Governor Adhikary. The remaining two other nominees will likely include experts well-known from banking, management, corporate law, financial and economic sectors of Nepali economy.
