On the background of the ongoing global climate negotiation, being held in Cancun, Mexico, the COP 16 National campaign was jointly hosted by the civil society coalitions-Climate Change Network Nepal (CCNN), Nepalis Youth for Climate Action (NYCA) and Climate Action Network Nepal (CAN Nepal) under the coordination of CEN.[break]
The campaign commenced at Basantapur Durbar Square from 10 am to 11 am and then continued at Ratnapark, Santibatika and culminated at Pulchowk at 3:30 pm. There were 70 volunteers who participated in the program. The campaign included Flash Mob, B-Boying dance, chanting of slogans on climate change issues, key note speeches from the organizers and also a display of banners and placards on the theme of climate change.
Dipesh Chapagain, Campaign Officer of CEN, said, "On this day, demonstrations and campaigns on climate change is held in different parts of the world and similarly in Nepal, in order to raise the issues of climate change and bring awareness among the youth, children and general people, we launched this campaign." He further explained that the main motive behind using Flash Mob, B-Boying dance and the group performance was to represent and show the energy, uniformity and unity of the youth who participated in the campaign.
Giri Khatri, event coordinator of the campaign and member of Nepalis Youth for Climate Action (NYCA), said, "The main objective of launching this campaign is to build pressure on global negotiators for the fair and concrete outcomes from COP 16. Moreover, the campaign will also expose the issues of climate change being faced in Nepal and the outcome will be in favor of a developing country like Nepal."
CEN is a non-profit organization which focuses on research-based education and advocacy campaigns on issues related to sustainable energy use and environmental conservation. CEN is also serving as a secretariat to the above mentioned youth networks for
climate change. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP 16) is being held in Cancun.
