DARJEELING, Dec 5: The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which came into the spotlight after leading a stormy agitation demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland in Darjeeling last year, has issued a diktat to students in Darjeeling to necessarily wear traditional Nepali attire. The Morcha has warned of force if its diktat is violated by students.

In what it calls an ´attire agitation´, the Morcha has made it mandatory for all students to wear Daura-Suruwal, coat and Nepali cap while attending schools.

Most students have so far heeded to Morcha´s calls. Morcha says the agitation to promote use of Nepali attire is needed to take Gorkhaland movement to a new height. “This agitation will be a key to make our movement final,” Morcha´s central committee member Harka Chhetri said. “This is all for the sake of Gorkha people´s grace and dignity.”

Chhetri believes that the new agitation would be helpful to put pressure on the central and state governments of India during their talks slated for December 21 on the GJM´ demand of Gorkhaland. The Morcha has deployed its volunteers to prevent students from entering into schools without wearing Nepali dress.
