KATHMANDU, Dec 16: Lawmaker CP Gajurel of UCPN (Maoist) held Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai responsible for the "cancellation of the scheduled visit" by the Chinese premier and called it a serious setback for Nepal.

Gajurel, who is the secretary of Prime Minister Bhattarai´s party, UCPN (Maoist), said Bhattarai is responsible for the "cancellation of Wen´s visit" as he had disclosed the date of the visit without confirming it from both sides.[break]

"The date should have been declared from Beijing and Kathmandu simultaneously but our prime minister unilaterally disclosed it from Baluwatar on November 15," Gajurel said speaking at parliament Friday. He termed Bhattarai´s advance disclosure as breach of diplomatic norms.

He also criticized the Nepali authorities´ statement that they were expecting five to seven billion US dollars from the Chinese side even as the proposals were not finalized from both sides.

"We were keenly awaiting the Chinese premier´s visit and were much optimistic that the trip would take Nepal-China bilateral relationship to a new high. The Chinese premier´s visit was taken as a golden opportunity because Nepal´s relations are perceived to be tilted to one particular side."

He described the development as probably the first such in the history of Nepal and a rare instance in world history as well.

Gajurel also accused Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijaya Gachchhadar of not providing enough security assurances on the part of Nepal government for the visit.

He demanded that the prime minister made the things clear in parliament.
