KATHMANDU, Feb 28: The French Embassy has appointed Purnima Shrestha as the Goodwill Ambassador for the 75th anniversary of Annapurna's first ascent. This milestone, achieved on June 3, 1950, by French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal with the support of the Franco-Nepali expedition team, will be commemorated on June 3, 2025.
According to a press statement issued by the Embassy of France in Nepal, as a mountaineer and photojournalist, Purnima Shrestha has built a strong connection with the mountains and their stories. Her extensive experience in high-altitude climbing makes her the perfect choice to represent this landmark event.
The statement reads, “The successful ascent of Annapurna marks a significant moment in mountaineering history and symbolizes the lasting friendship between Nepal and France. To celebrate this achievement, the French Embassy will organize a series of events, including talks, exhibitions, and discussions, to highlight the importance of this milestone and raise awareness about mountain-related issues.”
The anniversary event on June 3, 2025, will honor the legacy of the ascent and reinforce the enduring bond between Nepal and France.
